FURTHER EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE
For the past twenty eight years, I have been a consultant in radiation
and environmental and occupational health and safety as a partner of Edward Arthur Christman,
M.S., Ph.D., C.H.P.
Our company, Christman, Cua and Associates had 250 clients to date. We prepare radiation safety guide, license applications for radioisotope, chemical hygiene plan, hazard
communication right-to-know, bloodborne pathogen protection program
and laser and microwave safety guide. We do hazard survey of cabinet, dental
and veterinary x-ray machines, scanning electron microscope, x-ray diffraction and x-ray fluorescence. We do radiation shielding calculations for Ra-226
from well water in ion exchange resins. I proofread all informational and work materials that comes in to the office. I have dabbled in REOHS for Biotechnology and Nanotechnology.
I took a course on Spring, 1984, Nonionizing Radiation with Mr. Ron Peterson of Bell Laboratory as part of the course requirements for health physics at Rutgers University.
I was a balik scientist (returning scientist) for the Radiation
Protection Section of the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute for 1
month in June 1998. Collaboration has been ongoing since I worked for them
in 1973 through my publications, email, snail mail, fax, and telephone calls.
I helped the Marshall Islands become a Republic in May 1, 1986 and an International Atomic Energy Agency member in January 26, 1994. I was at the Permanent Mission of the Marshall Islands to the United Nations on that day IAEA inspection team was in the Marshall Islands. I talked with Counselor Neijon Rema Edwards, wife of then Ambassador Edwards and Espen, the economic counselor. He was from Scandinavia.
In September-December, 1992, I completed 12 credits at New York University
Environmental Medicine on Environmental Physiology of the Respiratory
Tract, Principles of Toxicology, Environmental Hygiene Lecture and
Laboratory. I was the research assistant of Dr. Beverly Cohen on alpha
track etch, smoking problem( i.e. 210Po and 210Pb in cigarette
smoke), tracheobronchial cast deposition, radon, particle sizing, and
In September-December, 1991, I completed a graduate survey course in environmental science, one on the regulations and management of hazardous waste(Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act, Superfund Clean Up SARA, Clean Air and Water Act) and one on physics of radiation therapy at Columbia University School of Public Health.
I have experience with the use of a Tandem Van de Graaff and a Van de
Graaff accelerator for PIXE-PIGE analyses, reactors, radiation dosimetry
and instrumentation, atomic absorption spectrometry, direct current
plasma, xray fluorescence, gas chromatograph, UV-VIS spectrometer, x-ray diffraction unit, scanning electron microscope-x-ray microanalysis, gas
chromatograph-mass spectrometry, gases and vapor analyzers-nitrous
oxide, benzene, ozone, xylene, aerosol sampling instruments,
ventilation measurements, etc.
June, 1977-May, 1980
Participated in the Department of Energy(DOE) Marshall Islands
Radiological Program at the Safety and Environmental Protection Division
(SEPD), Brookhaven National Laboratory(BNL).
My activities included a field trip to the Marshall Islands to obtain
samples of vegetation, food, soil, and bioassay samples for radionuclide
analysis, air sampling and resuspension studies, a study of the
lifestyle and dietary habits of the Marshallese. Research efforts
included air sampling and resuspension program and fission track
autoradiography of Marshall Island teeth using several reactors, e.g.
ANL-CP5, BNL-BMRR, BNL-HFBR, and MITR-II. The Sr-90 in teeth
analysis was done at BNL; the Plutonium and daughter products at ORNL; the
Uranium and Thorium Radioisotopes at LASL.
January, 1978-April, 1978.
Radiological Control Office, Purdue University. University health
physics activities which included isotope receiving and dispensing, radiation surveys, air sampling and radiation counting, radioactive waste inventory, microwave survey, use of the liquid scintillation counter. I read the authorization forms for the many radiation machines and radioisotope users in laboratory research and development at Purdue University.
I studied under Dr. Paul Ziemer, PhD, who subsequently became the assistant secretary of environmental health and safety of the Department of Energy under President George Bush, the first.
June 5, 1976-August 19, 1976.
Health Physics Summer Training Program at Safety and Environmental
Protection Department, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton, L.I., N.Y.
August 1973-August, 1975.
Research Associate III, Health Physics Department. Philippine Atomic
Energy Commission(PAEC). Activities included hazard survey of x-ray
machines and calibration of 60Co, 137Cs, Therapy X-ray, and 4 MeV Linac,
personnel monitoring, neutron activation analysis of diet items, e.g.
rice, x-ray fluorescence spectrometry, and surface evaporation of
radioactive liquid waste.
